Stuck with some drab looking lino? Tired of crusty old carpets? Time to revamp your floors with some ground-breaking flooring ideas!

There are endless ways that you can give your pad that personal touch. From posh paint jobs to fancy furnishings, there has never been more choice available to home owners when it comes to getting a fabulous finish. But why stop at throw pillows to make your mark?

Many of us miss out on a huge opportunity to make our homes even more personal and unique. The flooring of a room can easily be overlooked or picked out without too much thought. However, choosing your floor can be just as important as any other design feature. And, just with any other aspect of your home, the choice for flooring is plentifuland you’ll find that laminated floors have the largest choice. There is a huge selection of laminate flooring options available with 100’s of colours and designs and if you’re shopping online make sure you order a few samples before making that final purchase.

A fab floor can give a room a whole new lease of life, and can complement a unique design style brilliantly.

Here are 10 unusual floors that can give your home the real wow factor.

Wood Mosaics Floor

Wood floor mosaics offer endless possibilities for personal designs. Often tailor made by master craftsmen, these floors pay close attention to the mosaic tradition. Both bold and beautiful, wood floor mosaics make a fancy feature for any room.

Faux Stone Flooring

Faux stone flooring brings a little of the outdoors right into your home. It comes in a wide range of colours and designs, and can be flat or raised and textured. Give your home a hint of the natural world with stone effect flooring for an entire room, or grab a fascinating feature in the form of a textured pebble-style rug.

Optical Illusion Flooring

Optical illusion flooring quite literally comes in all shapes and sizes. Often achieved by using three dimensional flooring solutions, these textured walkways are always a massive focal point of any home.

Parquet Flooring

The parquet floor effect is achieved by arranging wooden blocks to create a geometric pattern. Give your traditional wooden floor a modern slant by leaving out the straight edges! Straight wooden planks are cut at an angle in parquet flooring to give a staggered look over a large area. Mix up the colours of your planks for a really fresh finish.

Flaw-Accentuating Floors

Speaking of cutting out the straight edges, flaw-accentuating flooring is specifically designed to do what it says on the tin: accentuate its flaws. This effect is most often created by taking natural wooden flooring and having it cut in a way that follows the natural growth of the tree it came from. Looking for a simply spectacular way to create a naturally beautiful and subtle feature floor? Nature has no straight lines, and neither does flaw-accentuating flooring!

Copper Penny Flooring (DIY)

There are some great DIY flooring ideas to get stuck into, and this is one of the best. Many of us have a penny jar floating around somewhere, but you might need a few of them to pull off this popping penny masterpiece. Copper penny flooring is made by carefully laying out old pennies over your subfloor, filling in the gaps with black grout, and covering it all with a clear resin. Leave to set and, voila! A truly fascinating floor well worth talking about! These floors can take some time to complete, but there is a bright side to look on: you can purchase ready-made flooring tiles from shops and online flooring retailers.

Reclaimed Wood

Reclaimed wood can be more cost effective than other flooring options, and it comes with its own history to boot. Wood can be reclaimed from almost anywhere, from old whiskey barrels to historic shipping containers. Often reclaimed wooden planks are marked with manufacturers’ prints or shipping details that are such to get guests asking questions. If you’re looking for a feature floor full of history and a tale or two to boot, reclaimed wood is a good way to go.

Unique Tiles

Look for a bit of unique fun in your home? Go for shaped tiles rather than traditional square ones. Jigsaw tiles, like those shown above, can be as easy to fit as their square counterparts, and add a fun feature to any room.

Collage Carpets

Another one for the DIY lovers looking to get stuck into a design. Collage carpets can be anything from small rugs to whole floors, and are made exactly how you like them! Mix and match old fabrics or clothes to get a real personal touch in your living room.

Interactive Illuminated Floors

Looking for something completely out there? Look no further. Modern illuminated flooring solutions from LightFader Flooring literally lights up when you walk into the room! This touch sensitive floor is activated by pressure, which displaces fluid and creates a glowing effect. Footprints are visible for about a minute after impact. Brilliant for any funk lovers out there, if this floor isn’t a centrepiece, then what is?

Feeling inspired? Don’t forget about your floor when you get decorating! But be careful; no matter how amazing a floor might look on paper, it can be a different story when it’s under your feet. Take a look at some top tips on how to avoid some common flooring mistakes.

Happy floor hunting!
