Shingle Farmhouse Exterior

Cladding is now a common ingredient inside and outside homes across Australia. Of course there are specific criteria that all cladding must adhere to. In particular flammable cladding is currently under the spotlight and may even be banned.

Cladding offers a wide range of benefits to your home. It protects it from the elements, helps to insulate it and reduce your energy bills and is particularly good at making your home look good in virtually no time!

The traditional approach is wood cladding, but there are several other very attractive options:

Vinyl Cladding

All you need is the right palliside upvc vinyl cladding and your home will not just look fantastic, it will be weather proof and extremely low maintenance.

In fact, one of the best things about this type of cladding is that you can choose to have it in virtually any colour. All you need to do is wash it occasionally and it will look after itself!

Metal Cladding

This is not the first thing that comes to mind when you consider cladding simply because you’ll be picturing corrugated tin sheets.

However, this is no longer the case, although the corrugated sheets are still available if you want them!

Metal cladding is now available in a range of styles, smooth, rippled or even made to look like wood. It is also powder coated which means it can be nearly any colour!

It makes a great insulation barrier, is hard wearing and surprisingly stylish. You can clad your entire home with it or even mix it with other forms of cladding to get the best look possible!

Cement Render

Although this technique has been popular in many parts of the world it is not one that Australians have embraced until recently.

All it requires is sand, cement and possible some aggregate; depending upon the finish you would like. Your entire house is then covered and left to dry; either a smooth or stipulated finish.

Once it has dried you can paint it to ensure the render is protected and your house looks stylish and as good as new. It will require washing occasionally and probably repainting every 5 years.

It should be noted that this is not a job for the amateur; a professional can render your entire house surprisingly quickly.

Stone

Houses are no longer made from stone as it is expensive and difficult to build with. But, this doesn’t mean it can’t make a great cladding for your home!

You can now purchase thin stone panels which look like real stone but are actually made from cement. Real stone moulds are used to create this authentic look.

The panels can then be fastened to your house to create a stone look finish. This is great for a dramatic effect or if you are trying to adopt contemporary building techniques on an old house. It is also great for insulation and requires very little maintenance.
