The world can be a scary place that sometimes makes people feel unsafe in their own homes. Prioritizing security can help improve overall comfort and deter anyone with bad intentions from targeting your residence.

Fortunately, making your home more secure doesn’t have to be expensive or time-consuming. Here are five things you can do to improve the security of your home.

Change or Update the Locks

If you have an older home or one that was owned by someone before you, you should change or update the locks. According to the experts at All Time Locksmiths, working with a reputable, criminal record checked locksmith is one of the best ways to improve your home security. Have them replace old, finicky locks and evaluate if you have what you need in place to stay safe.

If you have older windows with latch locks, invest in adjustable window security bars for reinforcement. This is also beneficial if you forget to lock a window or prefer to leave your windows open slightly during the warmer months.

Invest in Yard Lights

Break and enters tend to be crimes of convenience. The culprit either lives nearby and has some sort of familiarity with your schedule and belongings, or they target the house that’s easiest to access. So, when you invest in those locks, remember to use them!

Yard lights, whether they’re automatically activated at dusk or triggered by a motion sensor, are a simple yet powerful tool for deterring criminals from stopping by for a visit. As these lights make it challenging to go unprotected, most would-be robbers will avoid your property out of fear of being seen. Consider having a combination of night-activated and motion sensor lights on your property to keep everything covered.

Install an Alarm

Don’t be fooled by what you see on television; it’s rare to find a criminal who knows how to hack alarms and has the inclination to do so. Many burglars will look for the blinking light of an alarm system through a window before breaking in and avoid those homes that have them. Those who don’t stop to look will usually take off once an alarm is triggered.

Installing an alarm is a worthwhile investment, especially if you have children who stay at home during the day, as daytime burglaries are actually more prevalent than nighttime break-ins. This is believed to be a result of robbers wanting to avoid an encounter with the homeowner.

Know Your Neighbors

Don’t underestimate the benefits of a nosy neighbor. Take the time to become friends with your surrounding neighbors. Let them know that you value keeping your neighborhood safe and would love for them to report any suspicious activity. Of course, you’ll do the same for them.

If you become comfortable with a neighbor, ask them to keep an eye out when you go on vacations or travel out of town. Keeping your neighborhood safe and secure is a community effort that benefits everyone.

Don’t Advertise Your Absences

Social media is a great way to share your memories and the important events of your life. However, you don’t always know who might casually mention their envy toward your upcoming trip to a sunny, tropical destination. For those with ill intentions, this is the perfect invitation into your home while you’re away.

Rather than letting everyone online know when you’re gone, share your memories when you return. This will help keep your home secure and also keep you focusing on having fun on the sun, rather than spending time scrolling online.

Home security is simple: lock your doors and use common sense when going out of town. Creating a strong relationship with your neighbors and putting basic security measures in place will enhance your security, so you can rest easy.
