In home decor as in fashion, animal-inspired prints swing in and out of style. While I’ve seen some over-the-top jungle themed rooms, I admire traditional spaces with a few touches of something wild.
One print in particular, Shagreen, a.k.a. sharkskin, strikes just the right balance of elegance and exoticism. With its smoothly pebbled texture, Shagreen has a long-standing history of fascination among the most noble, from pharaohs to samurais and queens to celebrities! In fact, Marie Antoinette was known to order something new in Shagreen for herself at least once a week. Let’s take a look!
When the economy was booming in the 1920s, and grandeur was at its height, real Shagreen skin was considered a staple – which is why modern Art Deco enthusiasts tend to include real Shagreen, or Shagreen prints, in their home decor. It can be found in everything from furniture and accessories to wallpaper and tile! Recently, one of my favorite luxury tile brands, Artistic Tile, launched a Shagreen large format porcelain tile that I’m absolutely obsessed with!
What’s intriguing about the Shagreen Collection by Artistic Tile is how closely the surface resembles real sharkskin. Artistic Tile CEO & Founder, Nancy Epstein, says it took her seven years to find the right partner to produce a Shagreen tile worthy of their clientele. Their choice, veteran decorative surfaces designer, Steve Charles, was devoted to creating the most realistic Shagreen tile of any designer before him.
In describing his process, Charles says, “the way the Shagreen pieces are laid out is executed artistically, so the pearls form an attractive, harmonious composition. This beautiful texture is offset by delicate color.”
Artistic Tile’s Shagreen Collection is available in 3 neutral colorways, White, Grey, and Coffee, and looks subtly exotic and luxurious in any space, but I would imagine it looks especially nice in entryways, parlors, and dining rooms. A MUST see!
I hope you’ve enjoyed seeing this fresh tile material. I am loving its rich look! What do you think?
Have a great Sunday, my friends! We’ll talk soon!
