Owning a house is lovely. You have a basement, an attic, a lot of rooms, a backyard, and more. You have all the space in the world, and you can do whatever you want with it. There’s no one imposing their rules and banning you from doing so. It’s heaven on Earth. Right? Well, yes and no.

House owners have it hard. There’s no building superintendent to call if you notice a leaking, a damp spot, or a musky basement. And yet, those problems must not be ignored. That’s why we will take a look at four issues likely to occur in your home. Additionally, we will give you a piece of advice on how to handle them and make your future life more comfortable.

Rotting Woodwork

Old, wooden furniture, decks, and window frames are susceptible to rotting – especially if you live in a damp climate, and they don’t get a lot of sunlight. Sometimes, just a few planks rot, but it spreads with time. As a result, the structure becomes unsafe and suffers decay over the years.

The best way to go about this is to try to establish which pieces of wood are rotten and then replace them. If you keep ignoring it, the problem will only get worse! If only a few planks are affected, you can grab a saw and do it yourself. However, don’t play carpenter if the entire structure is impacted. In that case, you will need to have a professional do it for you.

Leaking Bathroom Utilities

Dripping faucets and leaky bathrooms are unfortunately a widespread occurrence in homes. If pushing the handle harder doesn’t do the trick, you shouldn’t neglect it. Besides water waste and annoying dripping sounds echoing through your home, this can lead to damage to utilities over time.

Instead, pay a visit to the local hardware store and get replacement parts. For faucets, new O-rings will do the trick. With toilets, the flapper is what usually creates the problem, and it’s easy to replace. If you have a leaking shower or these tricks don’t work, you might need to call a repair service.

Clogged Gutters

Any backyard owner is aware of how many leaves and twigs tend to find their way into the gutters. When it rains, the water overflows the drains and ends up all around your house. As the years pass, the water on the walls may lead to peeling and mold. During the winter, the problem becomes more immediate as it tends to freeze and lead to slippage.

The solution to this problem is straightforward. Clean the gutters regularly, as that way it’s easier and becomes a Sunday-morning habit. If you need more help, gutter guards are an affordable little tool that prevents debris from getting stuck in your gutter.

Damp Basement

As we mentioned in the previous scenario, the water from the gutters may lead to your walls becoming moldy. The room affected the most by this issue is the basement as it tends to be cold and not receive any sunlight.

As a consequence, the walls deteriorate, while emitting a nasty smell. If the situation becomes horrible, the things you stored in the basement may suffer damage.

The best way to avoid this is by installing outside tools that keep the water away from the edges of your house. If your home doesn’t have a drain tile around the foundation, installing one is the best way to safeguard against this. Keep in mind that it’s a significant investment, though.
