Most people barely care for their lawns during the fall as the grass is barely growing. However, you also need to pay attention to your yard during the fall; the grass is preparing for winter by absorbing nutrients and moisture. Below are some tips to show you how best to care for your lawn to ensure you have vibrant grass for the spring:

Aerate your Lawn

The soil often gets compacted when kids play on your lawn, or many people walk on it. The fall is a great time to aerate your soil to ensure that oxygen, nutrients, and water easily reach the grass roots. It is best to aerate the lawn before applying fertilizer to ensure that the fertilizer reaches the roots. There are many hand-held or gas-powered aerators you can use, but you can also try using aerating sandals. They all work by extracting chunks of soil as they punch holes in it.

Remove the Leaves

Everyone loves to play with the leaves, and removing them is no fun. However, to keep your lawn healthy, rake them often before they accumulate. Once all the leaves fall off, and it starts to rain, they become one sticky, thick layer over the grass which will be difficult to remove and will predispose your turf to fungal diseases. In addition to disease, they also block air and light from adequately reaching the grass. You can use a leaf blower or lawnmower fitted with a vacuum system if the backyard of your home or cottage is too big.

Mow your Lawn

Your grass will still need to be cut to remain at the 2.5-3” height, as it still grows, albeit slowly. Any longer and it will be vulnerable to snow mold and other fungal diseases.

Keep Watering the Lawn

Despite the onset of rain and dew and reduced rates of evaporation, the moisture that nature provides may not be enough for the roots. If the weekly rainfall is less than one inch, then you still need to keep watering the lawn. However, be sure to disconnect and flush your irrigation system at least by the end of October to avoid damage due to freezing.

Apply Fertilizer

The best time to apply fertilizer to your lawn would be in the fall; this is because the grass’ roots and rhizomes grow fast despite the cold weather. Fertilizer application enables them to develop healthy and deep enough for a healthy tuft in the spring. Carry out a soil pH test to determine the right fertilizer for your lawn, otherwise, go for a slow-release granular fertilizer. Be sure to apply the fertilizer evenly.

Remove the Weeds

The fall is the time to remove all the weeds from your lawn. As they absorb nutrients, like other plants, they will also take up the herbicide, and you can be sure that they will not be a nuisance in the spring.

Conclusion:

Taking care of your lawn before the grass becomes dormant is the best way to ensure that you have a healthy lawn the next year. If your yard is too large and you live in Phoenix, a contractor like Phoenix Lawn Care Service will expertly handle all your lawn’s needs.
