For most people, an easy maintenance garden means one that has been mostly paved over. This can be OK or some families. They may just want somewhere to sit out on warmer days. But, for others, this style of garden does not really appeal. They like to be able to enjoy some greenery and want to be as environmentally friendly as possible.
Fortunately, it is possible to put together a garden that is good for nature yet will not take too long to maintain. Here are a few tips to get you started.
Using wildflowers and grasses is a great way to reduce the amount of maintenance you have to do. These plants are hardier than most of the commercially bred ones are.
If you want to you could give the whole area over to wildflowers. But, most people simply plant the bottom half of their garden out in this way. This leaves the top half free to be turned into a patio and lawn area perhaps with a few low maintenance shrubs and trees.
The nice thing about this style of garden is that all you have to do to look after it is to cut the lawn in the summer. Plus, maybe trim the trees every few years and wash down the patio every now and again. These tasks do not take long leaving you free to enjoy your outdoor spaces more.
Watering a garden can take up a surprising amount of your time. If you plant mainly drought-resistant varieties you will not have to do much watering, though you can find the right hose nozzle here that will make the job much easier. Also, if your garden is mostly drought-resistant, should the weather get really hot, like it has been lately, you should not lose all of your plants. Clearing away all of the dead matter and starting again the next year is very time-consuming. Not to mention expensive.
If you do decide to create some flowerbeds use plenty of mulch. This will keep the weeds to an absolute minimum and help to feed your plants too.
Feeding your plants well should also help to save you time and money in the long run. You only have to add a little manure around each plant to keep them strong and healthy. The healthier they are the less prone to disease they will be, which means you will not have to waste time spraying. Or, digging out old plants and putting in new ones.
Large shrubs will take up plenty of space, leaving you less to weed. They look impressive too, especially if you choose the colorful varieties.
Planting trees, flowers and shrubs that change color throughout the year is a good way to introduce variety into your garden without your having to do any extra work. Japanese Maples and fruit trees are perfect examples of this type of plant. They provide a colorful display, which changes at various times of the year.
