T & P Relief Valve leak is discovered when large amounts of water gushes out and this happens when the temperature of the water reaches too high. So here are some tips to handle that:-

  1. On the thermostat, check the temperature and tamp it down if it is too high. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the recommended temperature is 120 degree Fahrenheit or 49 degree Celsius which is ideal balance between the safety and comfort.
  2. Ensure that the thermostat fits perfectly against the tank.
  3. Ensure that the thermostat is actually working because if not, then you will have to get replaced.
  4. There could be leak if the valve is defective, therefore, check on that and get it replaced if it is defective. But before you do that, drain your tank.

Leak at the Inlet Connections

The source of the leak in your heater could be the connection to the cold water inlet pipe or the hot water inlet pipe. Therefore, if the leak is a minor one, then you will have to tighten the connection with the pipe wrench but if it doesn’t get repaired, then you will have to call in the plumber.

Leak in Heating Element Gasket

It is difficult to locate the source of leak in a heating element gasket because the gasket is manufactured with insulation and this insulation covers it completely and has an access panel on the side of the electric heater. Over a period of time, this gasket undergoes wear and tear and therefore there is no other way other than replacing it.

These are some tips to help you with repairing some of the basic leaks in electric objects. Small leak system may seem harmless in the beginning but in the long run it can cause a lot of problems and can burn a deep hole in your pocket. Leaks are quite common in gas and electric storage-style water heaters. But it is better to take the help of a licensed professional just to be on safer side. Contact a professional if it is out of your ability.
