I don’t know about you but the only thing I’m sure about when it comes to sleep is that I don’t get enough of it. Every morning I give myself the same telling-off, asking why I couldn’t have just gone to bed earlier, or wondering what the secret to a successful, uninterrupted night’s sleep really is. The inventor Thomas Edison famously only ever slept in sporadic twenty-minute bursts, but I think it’s safe to say that most of us have slightly longer demands when it comes to how long our heads stay on that pillow.
The effects of a poor sleep pattern are well known – you feel tired and lethargic, your productivity falls, you don’t look your best. In extreme scenarios it can even contribute to anxiety and depression. A recent ‘Shattered Britain’ study by Silentnight showed that 75% of Britons suffer from the ill effects associated with not getting enough rest. The advice on just how many hours of sleep constitute a good night’s sleep is an area of debate amongst experts, but most agree that there is no ‘magic number’, and that the amount of sleep each person needs is down to the individual. However, whatever our nightly requirements, there are simple steps we can all take to improve the quality of sleep that we get each night. Sleep expert Nerina Ramlakhan says that “the foundations of a good night’s sleep are your sleep environment and a supportive mattress”, and cites buying a new mattress as one of the main causes of improvement for sleep-deprived patients, as often a worn-out mattress can cause discomfort and interrupted sleep patterns. It is recommended that we change our mattress every seven years, as after this time the springs can wear out and their supporting qualities fade.
As with many things in life, the quality of your mattress will often come down to what you pay for it. A cheaply made mattress may cost less in the short-term, but the effects of muscle cramps and sleep deprivation mean it’s definitely a false economy! This doesn’t mean you have to pay through the nose, just seek out quality products from specialized retailers such as Silentnight or Rest Assured. Innovations such as Miracoil springs and memory foam can help to provide the targeted support you need for a deep, restful night, and they should last longer than cheaply made alternatives too. You should also make sure you’re going to bed in the right frame of mind for a restful night. Try not to use your laptop or watch television directly before turning in, as it will keep your brain buzzing when you should be shutting down. Drinking alcohol before bed can also negatively affect your sleep pattern – many people believe that a pre-bed tipple helps them to switch off, but in reality it just increases the chances that you’ll wake up in the night. Relax, listen to some calming music and let the stresses of the day fade from your mind, and a blissful night’s rest should be easy to achieve.
Have a great Sunday, my friends!
“Dear God,
If I am wrong, right me. If I am lost, guide me. If I start to give-up, keep me going.
Lead me in Light and Love”.
Have a wonderful day, my friends and we’ll talk again tomorrow.”
