Browsing around Home Bunch, you’ve probably found numerous interior design ideas that you would love to try out in your own home.  But once you start thinking seriously about renovating and redecorating, you may find yourself up against some roadblocks—especially in the financial department.

Suddenly that project you were hoping to take on next week gets put on the backburner.  You think you might get around to it next month … or maybe the next.  Before you know it, it is relegated to the pile of “someday.”

So what can you do to save money to renovate your home sooner?  If you want to turn your interior design dreams into realities, here are some financial tips to help you make it happen.

1.  Pay your mortgage off early.

One great way to start is to try and pay off your mortgage early.  Whether this will help you to afford your next redecorating or renovation project depends on how far along you are in the process and what you are trying to save up for, but consider this:

If you pay just $20 extra each month toward your mortgage over the next 30 years, that could result in $7,216 in interest savings.  Not only that, but you will pay off your entire mortgage 14 months sooner.  Make it an extra $100 per month, and your savings could be in excess of $30,000.

What could you do with $30,00?  You could tackle some serious home renovations!

2.  Go solar.

Something else you can do which can result in savings much sooner is get off the grid.  If you install solar panels on your house, you do have to put down an initial outlay of cash, but from that point forward, you start saving money on your electric bill every month.

Many people discover that their solar panel installation can pay for itself within a year.  After that point, all the money you save is money you can use elsewhere to renovate and improve your home—including on your home decorating projects!  Just imagine if you could put a percentage of your utilities bill each month toward interior design.  Next year, you could be doing just that!

3.  Invest in something.

Another way you can start saving money toward interior design projects is to begin investing.  And that is something you can get into right now, even if you do not have a lot of money to invest.

For example, consider real estate crowdfunding.  Some of these platforms let you get started investing in real estate with as little as $1,000.  Thanks to the internet, a lot of investment vehicles which used to only be available to the rich are now available to the average consumer.

Investing is a great way to supplement your income, allowing you to pay off your mortgage faster and make improvements to your home.

4.  Go the DIY route and use reclaimed materials.

Sometimes saving money for interior design projects has less to do with saving up for an expensive project—and more to do with rethinking that project, your approach, and the budget you really need.

Do you really need to contract with a professional interior designer or architect to help you with your renovations?  Many projects can be tackled on your own.  You might need to learn some new skills and invest in materials and tools, but doing so can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

You can cut down on your supply costs by looking for reclaimed materials to use for redecorating.  Many of these can be purchased cheap, or you might even find them for free (wood pallets being a great example).  Reclaimed materials help to create a rustic ambiance, which is very trendy these days.

5.  Refinance if you need to.

It could be that you are spending more on your mortgage than you need to.  If your interest rate has ballooned out of control, shop around.  You may very well be able to refinance at a more affordable interest rate.  This can save you thousands of dollars, which you can then invest back into your home in the form of interior design projects.

If You Look for Clever Ways to Save, You May Be Able to Finally Tackle That Home Renovation Project

It is easy to let our dream projects fall by the wayside when we cannot afford them.  But you may very well be spending money you could be saving.  Look into refinancing your mortgage or paying it off early, switching to solar power, and investing.  See if a DIY approach or reclaimed materials can reduce the cost estimate for projects you want to try.

With a combination of these cost-saving strategies, you may very well be able to renovate and redecorate sooner than you think!
