Small Homes. Small Homes #SmallHomes Allison Ramsey Architects

Building land is becoming harder to find, and more expensive to buy in many big cities. As a result, the cost of housing is going up and properties are getting smaller.
Multi-generational households are once again becoming the norm, and the number of people sharing a home with friends or tenants is rising. In short, most of us have to make do with less space, which means the way we decorate our homes needs to change too.
When space is limited, the way you lay a room out, and how you decorate it becomes critical. If you get it wrong, you can easily end up with a space that is not fit for purpose, and feels claustrophobic. Fortunately, there are plenty of easy ways to make a small room feel larger, and turn it into somewhere that you feel comfortable and will want to spend time.

Let Natural Light In

The way a space is lit has a huge impact on how big feels. Generally speaking, the lighter and brighter a room is the bigger it feels.
Little touches like installing a window above the door, and choosing blinds instead of curtains will let more natural light into a room. Numerous studies show that the more exposure we get to natural light, the better we feel.

If you cannot get more natural light into a space use lighting fixtures to brighten up the room instead. Having multiple light sources ensures that there are no dark corners, which shrink the room in our mind’s eye, and make us feel hemmed in. A neat trick is to use pendant lighting. Doing this emphasizes the height of the room, which distracts us from the fact that the room is small.

Small Room Flooring Tricks

The type of floor you choose, and how you lay it, will also have a big impact on how big a small room feels. For example, opting for planks style flooring instead of thin strips fools the eye and has the effect of making the floor space seem much bigger. You can find exactly what you need to pull off this look at the Discount Flooring Depot.
Another tip is to use the same flooring in adjacent rooms. Doing this draws the eye, and gives the illusion that the adjoining hallway or terrace is also part of the room.

A Place for Everything

A cluttered room always looks smaller than a neat and tidy one does, so it is very important to build in as much storage as possible. If you are clever, and think outside the box, you will be surprised by just how much extra storage space you can incorporate into a room.
Nowadays you can buy sofas and chairs with storage built in under the cushions. Even something as opting for nested tables that have small drawers built into them can make a world of difference. Every little bit of extra space helps, and it soon adds up into a lot of extra room to stow away your belongings.
