If you want to extend the living space in your home, why not use the outside as well as the inside? It’s important to remember that your yard does not have to be to just to look at, to work in or for your children to play in. Your yard can be an integral part of your everyday living. One of the best ways of achieving this is to create a decking area, where you can sit and relax, or entertain your friends.

If you are creating a deck, you need to think about how you are going to light it. You should consider the practicalities of any electrical work that is required; speaking to a local electrician is a good idea. You should also think about the atmosphere you want to create, as well as the safety of you and your guests. Here are some lighting ideas you may want to consider.

A Good DIY Solution

If you would like to have a go at providing lighting for your deck, without hiring a professional electrician, you may want to think about using fiber optic lighting. You simply buy a system which generally consists of a fan-cooled box with cables running from it. The lights are located at the end of the cables. You can place the box in a location where it’s not exposed to the elements. This type of system is really simple to use, and creates an impressive lighting effect.

Use Posts to Light the Way

If you have a deck in your yard, it should be protected by posts and a railing. You can place lights in these posts, so that the entire area around the decking is lit. This makes it easier for people to walk around the deck, after the natural light fades. This is a permanent lighting solution, so all you have to do is switch the lights on when you need them.

Light and Cool Air at the Same Time

Another permanent lighting solution is to install an integrated ceiling fan and light. This not only helps to illuminate the deck; it also helps you to keep the area cool, even on warm summer evenings. You can choose this type of lighting, and combine it with some string lights, for around the railings of the deck.

Part Time Lighting

You may decide that you do not want permanent lighting on the deck. We like the cool supersize floor lamps you can buy, which can be moved from the deck if required; although they are weighted down making them fairly heavy. It’s worth noting that you need to ensure that you have exterior electrical sockets which are weatherproof if you want to choose this option.

Traditional and Romantic

If you are hoping to enjoy a romantic meal on the deck, candles are a good lighting option. They help to create a romantic atmosphere. But, you need to remember the safety aspect of burning candles. Be careful, and you will be safe, and have a beautifully lit environment around you.

Hopefully, I have inspired you with our ideas on deck lighting. Any of them can turn your deck into a charming place to spend an evening.
