Home Bunch - Interior Design Ideas

Having a lush and beautiful lawn is important if you want the exterior of your home to look amazing. A lawn is also a great place to spend time during the summer and it makes an excellent play area for kids. However, lawns do not just take care of themselves. They need to be mown, watered and generally cared for, if they are to remain in good condition.

We live in a DIY age when taking care of household tasks yourself is popular. With this in mind, it may seem like a good idea to look after your own lawn. Is this really the best choice for you? Should you do the work yourself, or would it be better to hire a professional to do it?

The pros and cons of DIY lawn care

There are several reasons why it makes sense to look after your own lawn. You need to weigh up the potential benefits against the pitfalls which we will consider later.

Pros

  • Initial cost savings to be made.

If you do the work yourself, you obviously do not have to pay for it. Mowing your own lawn has less upfront costs than hiring a lawn care professional to do the work for you.

  • Help with exercise

Getting out and about in your yard is a good way to get some exercise. This is especially useful if you are recovering after illness, are an older person, or are simply too busy to fit a regular exercise schedule into your life.

  • Full responsibility for the result

This can be a positive or negative, depending on how good you are at lawn care. If you are willing to invest the time and effort that is needed to learn, there is no reason why you should not have an impressive lawn. This gives you a great sense of pride.

Cons

  • The potential of a lacklustre lawn

If you do not have the touch required to create and maintain a healthy lawn, you could end up with an area of grass that looks ugly and uninspiring.

  • Hidden expenses

When you work out the cost of caring for your own lawn, it may seem like the expense should be limited. However, it’s important to remember hidden costs such as the maintenance, repair and replacement of a lawnmower and tools. These expenses can add up to a lot over a period of time.

  • Having enough time

Lawn care is not something you should rush. This can mean that you are left struggling to find enough time to properly care for your lawn.

Before you decide whether DIY lawn care is for you, you should take a look at the pros and cons of hiring a professional to do the work.

Pros

  • Having a perfect lawn

Professionals have the experience and expertise needed to create the perfect lawn for your backyard. They also know how to maintain the lawn, so it remains healthy and looking good.

  • Improved levels of safety

It’s a fact that accidents can happen during lawn care, even if you think you are being careful, Lawn mower accidents are one of the leading causes for childhood amputations in the US. Passing the work over to a professional helps keep you and your family safe.

  • Convenience

This is a major benefit of hiring someone to care for your lawn. You can have the work done whenever you choose, without having to make time to do it yourself.

Having looked at the pros, what about the cons of professional lawn care?

Cons

  • Higher costs

Upfront costs are certainly higher, if you hire a professional to look after your lawn. However, you need to weigh up the costs when you factor in the hidden costs of DIY care. If you are good at repairing and maintaining your mower, it’s likely that hiring someone to carry out your lawn care will be more expensive.

  • Work not up to standard

Not every lawn care professional is reliable. You may be unlucky and hire someone who only does the bare minimum and who does not produce great results.

There is no right or wrong decision when it comes to choosing between DIY lawn care and hiring a professional. The decision you make will depend on your circumstances. If you have plenty of time on your hands, have little opportunity to exercise and are willing to learn about lawn care, you may find that the DIY option is best for you. However, if you have limited free time and no interest in gardening, you may prefer to hire a professional. If you decide on this option, you can limit the negatives by researching the most reliable and best value for money professionals in your area.
