The modern lifestyle of being constantly connected to a monitor or phone screen and unwinding in front of the TV is costing us our rest. Answering work emails outside the office can cause you to spend more time at the computer than you should. Light from the monitor can stimulate your brain even though you might not realize it. If you’re drinking caffeine later and later in the day to stay alert, you’re revving up your body instead of letting it relax at a normal pace.
You may reason that you can get away with shorting yourself an hour of sleep every night so that you have more waking time to get your work done. What you’re doing is creating a sleep debt and costing yourself productivity. Your body needs a minimum of seven hours of sleep every night to function properly. Getting into the habit of sleeping six hours when your circadian rhythm needs more is a way to create a sleep debt for yourself. Another problem that arises is that natural body toxins build up in the brain and contribute to sleepiness and a lack of awareness if the body can’t clear them out.
You stay healthier when you get a good night of sleep. By taking some steps such as promoting proper ventilation in your home to create pleasant sleeping conditions, you can help yourself get the quality of sleep you deserve.
