Keeping your painting lines straight is imperative for creating professional-grade results. You could have the world’s best-prepped walls, the finest paint money can buy, and the best equipment available – and your paint job will still come out seriously substandard if you can’t make straight lines where colors come together.
Best Way To Make Straight Paint Lines:
This is what comes to the minds of most painters when they need to make a straight paint line. Let’s say that the goal is to make a chair rail-height color change in one of your dining room walls. So you paint the wall from the ceiling, down, slightly lower than the height you want to make a straight line color change. Then you let it dry.
After it is thoroughly dry, then take a few measurements, up from the floor, or down from the ceiling, to gauge where to put the masking tape. Stretch the tape out, stick one end and work it down to the opposite end of the wall. Now, you have a surface (the tape) that you can paint on to. When you carefully remove the tape, you have made a straight line in your paint!
Insider’s Straight Line Painting Secret #1: Use a very small detail brush to really zero in on your line’s straightness. A dot or two, here or there where needed, makes a big difference to your final product.
It’s important to know that all masking tapes are not equal; far from it actually. Cheap masking tape always seems to sit right beside the more pricy versions. Spend the extra few dollars to get the professional result you’re after. A good paint job, with straight paint lines, will add beauty and value to your home for years to come. So why not take the time to deliver professional-grade quality?
It’s important to always use professional grade tools, as well. A high quality set of tools can make a huge difference in your end result. You can find hardware online at sites like GotStock, or you can trek down to your local hardware store. The trick is not to go for the cheapest option, ask for others opinions to find a decent compromise between quality and price.
Insider’s Straight Line Painting Secret #2: Especially useful on older homes, use white latex caulk to smooth out corners. You can do this on ceiling/wall corners and wall/wall corners.
Many DIY (do it yourself) remodeling tasks are simply not well suited for most. Even though there’s a huge market, offering loads of quality instruction, many home and business owners end up wishing they would have never attempted these projects. In many cases, they end up with substandard products, and worse, unsafe results. If you are going to attempt the work of professional tradesmen, then you need to assume that they are called professional for reasons.
Now, unlike roofing, or framing, or running gas lines, painting is a DIY project that can successfully be completed by most. Just spend some time learning before you jump in. Arm your project for success with high quality paint and equipment (masking tape!) – and jump on in. You can’t mess it up so bad that you can’t paint it again. Just take your time and make those paint lines straight – makes the whole job shine!
