Home Bunch - Interior Design Ideas

I was asked another day to help a reader find ideas for a small space and I hope this can give her and all of you some inspiration. The most important thing when it comes to a small space is organization. Nothing will really help if you don’t keep the space uncluttered, and you need to be smart about storage. Buy furniture that comes with storage and make good use of your walls by using shelves.

When it comes to wall color, try to create some flow from room to room with the same color or by using colors that complement each other. If you use different colors, you’ll divide the space which sometimes can make it look smaller. If you love color, add it with decor like vases, art, pillows, throws and fresh flowers.

Remember to be creative. Living in a small space can be and feel very comfortable.

Some Sunshine

You can add some color into small spaces if you keep it well balanced.

The Furniture

And you can use normal sized furniture.

Compact & Creative

It’s small but you have everything you need to prepare your meals. Smart way to use color in a small space.

Furniture with skinny legs like the coffee table and the chair make the room feel expansive because you can still see the floor.

Let’s Stay Here All Day

This is so beautiful! I love the colors!

Mirrors… they’re still the best friend of small space, so use them!

Small but Pretty

Nicely done! They even added a bathtub in this tiny space.

To be successful with a small space you need to give some thought to it. You really need to plan it well, have only what you need and love. Don’t bring home things that aren’t necessary so you don’t start having clutter everywhere. And remember, with a small space you’ll clean it in less time and you’ll have extra time to do things for you.

Wonderful ideas for small spaces here! The couch at the end of the bed is actually a hide a bed, a terrific idea for an adolescent – hosting sleepovers made simple! Wish I had seen this picture when I was renovating a small bathroom a few years ago! And I love the living room/library combo. The blue kitchen would work for a home with a studen’t suite in the basement…though I would use closed cupboards, this is an inexpensive alternative. Thanks for these wonderful photos!

  2. Karen,

I always love reading your comments. You’re a wise woman! 🙂

    Have a great day!

  3. Yes your, right, organization is key when designing a small space. I love that kitchen, I love the contrast between the blue walls and butcher block. And the black cabinets were a very good idea to.

  4. These are some fabulous tips! We live in a decent size house, but know that in a couple years we will have to down-size to a small apartment most likely, when the hubs goes to graduate school.

I’m dreading it…BUT, I’m also looking forward to the design challenge!

  5. Hello Caroline!

Thanks for dropping by! It’s great to meet you!

Hello Luciane…I love, love love this topic as I have a relatively small bedroom and cannot seem to keep it organized. The configuration doesn’t allow for much change as my queen size bed would either block a window or my one and only closet. Since I live in the northeast having my bed next to the window, especially in winter is not a good idea. I’ve now gained some ideas and some inspiration to get my bedroom in order. As it is supposed to be my retreat, right? I have to get on the ball!

  11. Sharon,

It’s always great to read your comments! I’m so glad you got some ideas from it. If you want, you can send me a picture of your bedroom and I see if I can help with some ideas, ok? About the window, it would be chilly during the winter if you put your bed next to it, you’re right about that. What you can do to help with this issue is use insulated curtains (good to save energy too). You can find it even at Home Depot.

Good luck with your project! 🙂

I love this blog and have bookmarked it! Found you via A Page of Inspiration blog.

My husband and I just moved to England from the States, where we “sold it all” in order to make the move. We are in our 50s, and “starting over” with almost NOTHING!

I have a small space question.

Although we don’t as yet know what type of place we will be renting, we know it will be small. Could be a flat, perhaps a small, small house.

Would be foolish to buy furniture at this point, but – and here comes the question part – what would you say are some classic, basic things we could start collecting now? Things that would work no matter what size/type property one lives in?

I’ll start the list: a beautiful mirror …. perhaps several in different shapes/sizes.

What would you add to the list? And thank you!

  13. Welcome aboard, Denise!

    You’re coming from Kristin’s blog? That’s wonderful. I love her! She’s a sweet heart.

Thank you very much for bookmarking HomeBunch! It’s wonderful to have you here! I must say that I am so happy for you for moving overseas. I’m from Brazil and moved to Canada almost 10 years ago and I must say that this is home for me now, but it takes a while to adapt, and yes, we miss everything from where we’re from, but the positive side is that you’re experiencing things you wouldn’t if you didn’t go there. So, be always open to the new.
Talking about your next place there. I must say that I usually like to see the space before buying things for it, so I get the “feeling” of what will look good and be appropriate for it. But I think you’re needing to have some special things with you right now, so you start creating your life and your home there, am I right? If that’s the case, think about getting things that you love. You’re starting a new life, in a new home and that’s a great chance to have only things that speak to your heart, so you build a place there that you can feel truly at home. Start with things that can be moved easily for now, like throws, arts. No matter how small the space will be, you know you’ll have to have a bed, so buy the bedding if you find one that you really like, a picture that would look good in any space, some decor, maybe a nice chair, some pretty items for your kitchen and I like your idea of buying a mirror.
As I said, buy things that speaks to you and makes you feel happy. For the bigger things like couches, tables, etc, I’d recommend you to wait until you see the space. But you’re right, you can already start collecting things for you new home. And that, my friend, can be so exciting!

Have fun and let me know about your new place when you get it, ok? 🙂 I’m excited for you!

    Oi, Lu

Of course I love the first place! It a shabby-chic room. And, the last photo is my dream bathroom.

    Have a good day.

  18. Rachel said,

I’ve always wondered if it was “wrong” in the decorating world to put a bed in front of a window, but I think that first photo makes it look nice!

  19. That’s right, Rachel…. the first picture proves that isn’t wrong. Besides, I don’t really believe in “right or wrong” in design. You have to do what’s right for you, what works for you and how good it feels for you. 🙂

You are so funny! You always make me smile.
I am getting a masters in liberal and visual arts. I have a masters in law, but decided to do something I loved. This semester I am taking Italian Art History and ceramics. I took painting last semester, and I learned so much about color and mixing colors and tones. I took sculpture before that, and my heart is in the clay so I am certain I will love ceramics. Can’t wait to hit the wheel, haha!
    Have a great day.

    Hi gorgeous,

What a thoughtful thing to do – to put the post together after a request. I like this post. Small spaces bring out people’s creativity and I think you can often end up with a better room. You have to really think through every single piece.

    Mwah to you,

  35. Dovecote Decor said,

I have learned that small spaces are bereft of built ins. As the first wave of boomers hits 65, as of Jan. 1, downsizing and storage is a large issue. I would rather buy a piece of storage furniture I could move, donate or sell, than invest in built in carpentry that may get left behind to no profit. Also, I see as the boomers downsize, a supply flooding the market, so watch e-bay, and of course us, and compare prices.

  36. Joni webb said,

So cute! I love both bedrooms, Lots of great ideas. Thank you so much for your comment!

  37. A. Patel said,

Please please give me the dimension of the bathroom in the last picture! I’m trying to create something for my son, but have no idea what an actual product of small space would look like. If I had numbers to compare with, it would be extremely helpful!!!

  38. Rich Spaulding said,

I always thought the trick with small spaces was to use small furniture. Thanks for showing me other ideas.
