Cottage of the Week: Starting All Over Again
Many of us dream about having a little cottage by the sea or in the country. All we really want is a place where you can open the doors and leave all the stress behind. But spending only a couple of weeks a year can be too short and we start craving having that kind of lifestyle a little longer. That’s when many people change their life dramatically and decide to have their own year-round piece of paradise. That’s exactly what Victoria and Ben Chilvers did back in 2006. Victoria, an interior designer, and Ben, a partner at Priors Farm Equine Veterinary Practice in Forest Row, bought a tiny cottage in the English countryside. The cottage was built circa 1900 and even though we can picture it to be full of charm, unfortunately this wasn’t the case because the small building felt more like a shed. Here’s what Victoria had to say about the place: ”It was a real rural bachelor pad, stuffed with knick-knacks and in need of some serious work. The cottage really wasn’t either attractive or practical,” she says. “The front was just a blank wall with a single small window and the only thing of any interest was the mock Tudor rear façade.”
After much thought, the couple and architect Peter Hulbert and builder Tom Aronson decided the best thing was to knock the old cottage down and start building the cottage of their dreams. The result is an impeccably charming place and the best part is they don’t need to leave it and go back to the city, they proudly call it “home”.
The cottage, even though was built only a couple of years ago, it still has an old-charm feel, thanks to beautiful architectural details and antiques.

They made sure to keep a rustic, yet comfortable vibe around the entire cottage.

A cottage should always be simple but that doesn’t mean you can’t add some “sparkle”. Lovely choices were made here and the floors are very practical.
Cooking & Living
The kitchen opens to the family room and it has a very natural flow.
Hues
Victoria, the owner and designer, kept a very neutral palette throughout the entire cottage.

How adorable is that?! An antique armoire is the perfect piece for a child’s bedroom. Just make sure to use brackets on the back when having big pieces of furniture in a kid’s room.
Isn’t that the ultimate family cottage? I could easily live in this place. I love the simplicity and feel of this home. It’s somewhere you can write beautiful stories and create unforgettable memories.
