The increasing move towards digital commuting for work and online classes makes having a home office more important than ever. Our 6 things your home office needs provide all the information necessary to make smart choices about your work or study space.

Maintain an Organized Work Environment

Home Office. Small Home Office Ideas. Convert a small space to a polished eye-catching and functional home office. #HomeOffice #SmallSpaces

A cluttered office space with a mishmash of items from other rooms in the house will only distract you from working. Keep your desk, paperwork and computer equipment neat and organized. This strategy reduces the chances of you misplacing an important invoice or assignment. You’ll also trip over things less when they’re in their proper place.

Bottom Line: A tidy office maintains the air of professionalism needed to help you keep up focus. If you need a break, you can always venture into another room in the house and come back when you’re ready.

Humans Need Natural Lighting

Work life with no windows or sunlight feels more like solitary confinement. You don’t want to work in those conditions, do you? Your home office needs windows to allow outside natural light to mingle with the artificial sources on the inside. If you don’t have much natural light to work with, try painting your walls in colors that will make the most of your limited supply. For example, Orange-red paints make the room seem brighter, if you have a north-facing window, says the experts at Sherwin Williams. Sunlight effects paint colors differently at various times throughout the day, so plan your color scheme with care.

Buy The Right Office Chair

Sitting for long periods of time on an uncomfortable service is no way to keep up productivity. Your office chair is the most important piece of furniture in the room because it has the greatest impact on your physical health. Ergonomic chairs give better spine support and encourage proper posture than their cheaper alternatives. Sitting with less tension in your back muscles and pressure on your spine allows you to work for longer stretches. Studying for your nursing school classes or finishing a brief for an important client late in the evening is possible with the right furniture.

Minimize the Wires and Plugs

One computer plus an office phone, your mouse, printer and Internet router can create a snake’s nest of wires in your office space. All those devices need plugs too, which your room may have difficulty accommodating without proper planning. Streamline the circuitry by going wireless with your Internet and printer connections. Address all those devices in need of power by buying a multi-plug power strip.

Surge Protection is a Must: Buy a power strip with a built-in surge protector. It’s an absolute must to protect your expensive equipment from a terminal electrical discharge when the power goes out suddenly in a storm. The last you want is to lose that paper you’ve worked on for days because lightning struck a transformer miles away.

Size Your Furniture to Fit the Room

Spatial manipulation has a lot to do with how you feel when you walk into a room. High ceilings with little clutter, like you find in cathedrals, can leave you with a sense of awe. The cramped quarters of a submarine, in contrast, might make you feel anxious. Same is true for your home office. Bring in furniture that’s a proper size for the space available. Have an entire floor to yourself? Haul in the granite top executive desk. Working in a second-story loft? Go with the sleek desk with no frills. Regardless of your choice, make certain you’re still able to move around the room in comfort.

Don’t Skimp on the Plants

Home Office. Masculine Home Office Ideas. #HomeOffice

Never underestimate the benefits of a couple potted plants in your office. The added greenery strengthens the available oxygen supply and reduces carbon dioxide in the air. Improved air quality also means a reduced chance of catching a nasty virus while working from home (Sick Building Syndrome) and improved concentration.

Staying on task when you’re in a home office isn’t an easy feat. Follow this advice and you’ll cut down the likelihood of untimely distractions, paving the way for happier hours in your office.
