How do you imagine your kitchen being when you retire and finally move into your dream home? Imagine this, the kids moved away and you can plan that kitchen you have saved for for quite some time. How would you design it? What colors would you choose? How about the cabinets and island layout?
Ready to downsize, this retired couple from Ontario, Canada, made sure to build their dream farmhouse kitchen and realize the dream of living by the water, which immediately inspired the designer to paint the island in blue – the latest trend in kitchen cabinet color.
What I love about this farmhouse kitchen is the integrated dining, tongue and groove ceiling, windows, a hard-working island with a seating area that has plenty of room for knees, solid upper cabinets with leaded glass above and a mirrored backsplash, some open shelving and last but not least, that lovely blue island.
Make sure to take notes, after all, who knows, maybe this kitchen will be your inspiration for when your retirement comes! Trust me, this kitchen is worth start to save for!
Farmhouse Kitchen with Blue Island
Working closely with interior designer Nathan Kyle from Astro Design Centre, the homeowners created a kitchen that not only incorporates the dining room, but also suits the home’s farmhouse-inspired style.
The one thing that makes this kitchen so appealing in my opinion, is the amount of natural light that comes in from the outside, across the dining room table. It is a stunning kitchen with a lot of clever ideas. You can tell just by the pictures that the finish carpenter was very good.
Notice the kitchen layout. Isn’t it fantastic?!
Kitchen Dimensions: 20 by 16 feet.
A solid walnut countertop creates a designated seating area on the blue painted island. The remaining island features cream white quartz.
The perimeter counters are light gray quartz.
Glass Bell pendants are the Rustic Glass Pendants from Pottery Barn.
Wall paint color is “Benjamin Moore Shaker Beige HC-45“.
Blue Island Paint Color
The blue island color was inspired by the river located just outside of the house. The actual paint color was custom but very similar to “Benjamin Moore Mozart Blue”.
The blue island measures 5-foot by 8½-foot and incorporates shelves for cookbooks, hidden storage, drawers that fit pots and pans, a recycling station, a sink, a dishwasher and a microwave drawer.
The cabinet paint color were also custom but “Sherwin-Williams Antique White SW6119” is a similar color.
The floors are engineered hardwood. They have a hand-scraped finish that gives the kitchen a rustic feel. Also, here you can notice the custom molding details, such as toe kicks, that lend the cabinets a freestanding-furniture look.
Kitchen Hood & Backsplash
The range wall is one of the focal points of this kitchen thanks to the marble backsplash, corbels and a hood vent.
The hood vent has some storage as well; the panels on the end conceal touch-latch cabinets. Very useful space with multi-purpose use – Love that!
The backsplash is a custom mix of Grise Savoie and Thassos marble.
Range is by Thermador.
Shelves & Cabinets
Like any good farmhouse kitchen, this one features a mix of open shelves and cabinets. To give this kitchen a farmhouse style, the designer used a wide beadboard behind the open shelves and tongue and groove on the ceiling for a more finished look.
Hardware is Top Knob’s Aspen collection in light bronze.
The kitchen bar comes with a beverage refrigerator. Mirrors were used as backsplash to reflect light and the river view. Here, the designer used solid upper-cabinet doors to conceal the everyday items, and leaded glass doors on top to display beautiful items.
Expansive windows with mullions keep the view of the river open and suit the farmhouse-style architecture of the home.
Wonderful craftsmanship, materials coupled with great design. The combination of storage, display and work stations, in my opinion, is perfection. I doubt the home owners will ever tire of this kitchen.

Wasn’t it fun to see this beautiful kitchen today? I hope you had a good time and felt inspired.
We’re all feeling a little under the weather around here today. My daughter has the flu and I feel so sorry for her. I couldn’t sleep well… I woke-up many times during the night to check on her. My husband seems to be getting the same thing and I am starting to have a bad headache. Not fun, right? But I hope we feel better soon, especially my little girl.
I better get some rest now. We’ll talk again tomorrow!
Have a great day, my friends and thank you so much for being here today!
