The South Coast Rhode Island neighborhood in which this inspiring coastal family home is situated is largely flat—a coastal plain punctuated by large glacial erratics. Like these boulders, houses also sit as objects on the plain. The architects have designed a home that takes advantage of its natural surroundings, making it appropriate for a family that uses it for summer vacations.
Compact gambrel roofed homes are common in the neighborhood. Newer homes tend to be quite large compared to their neighbors, and more elaborate. The homeowners of this coastal home were not interested in something large and showy. They sought a compact but comfortable family home more in keeping with the vernacular cottages that give their neighborhood a character of laid-back, friendly, fun.
Take a look and you will see that the architects from Polhemus Savery DaSilva have gone beyond any request a homeowner can make.
Coastal Family Home
This beautiful coastal family home was completed in 2013 and it has around 2,514 square feet.
Beach House Flair
What’s not to love about the exterior of this home? I love the covered porch, the sunroom, shutters and the shingles.
Front porches are usually an attractive addition to any facade.
If you ask me, this is how a home should always feel when you open the front door: welcoming and bright!
The white trim color is “Benjamin Moore White Dove OC-17” in semi-gloss.
What makes a house feel like a home? For me, it should start by expressing its owner’s personality and feeling comfortable. When it comes to interiors, nothing is more important than feeling embraced by your home and that is often achieved by choosing to live with what you love.
Benjamin Moore Gray Wisp 1570
The best seat in the house!
A nice view of the living room, dining area and kitchen.
White Kitchen Design
This is a wonderful white kitchen with a subtle coastal flair.

The wall color is Benjamin Moore Gray Wisp 1570 Flat.
This island is approximately 8′ x 6′, which is really good size for workspace and eating.
Many of the light fixtures in this home were antique restorations, but “Rejuvenation” makes a very similar fixture.
With durable walnut countertop and mini subway tiles, this butler’s pantry has a timeless appeal.
This home carries a very soothing yet “happy” color palette.
Floors are knotty pine hardwood planks.
Stunning staircase and wainscoting.

This shared room is simple but beautiful! It’s all about sunny colors!
This is a great shower design with timeless subway tiles.
Mudroom Paint Color
Benjamin Moore Philadelphia Cream HC-30.
Isn’t this mudroom perfect? It even comes with a cute puppy!
Mat is the “Black Whale Hooked Rug” from “Nantucket Museum Shop”.
With a coastal motif, this sunroom is welcoming and very comfortable.
Great furniture layout.
Side of the House
This home is all about its architectural details. Notice the gorgeous cedar shake on gambrel roof with a turret and the beautiful landscaping.
Back of the House
A second floor deck spans between the pavilions and offers ocean views directly to the south and diagonally to the southwest between other houses.
Residential Architecture Ideas
The exterior trim is a custom color to match Eagle window’s Linen.
Charming cobblestone chimney.
The deck is accessible from the second floor hall and the master suite and via an exterior stair. Outdoor stairs often look like afterthoughts. They are a design challenge, especially on a site where blocking view is undesirable. Here The architect pulled the stair away from the façade and put it at an angle, making it more sculptural and blocking less of the adjacent screened in porch. Decorative arches make the underside of the stair playful and appealing but also brace the structure for stability.
A perfect way to end the night…
Did you have a good weekend? It’s being very busy and messy around here! My husband and I are painting the entire main floor and I am loving the change. I usually use Benjamin Moore paints, but I loved a color I saw at Sherwin-Williams and decided to paint my dining room/living room using their “Opulence” line. The color – SW 7050 Useful Gray – is a very calming gray with some green undertone. It works beautifully with my current trim paint color (White Dove OC-17), but I might need to repaint them also. I want everything to feel completely refreshed around here!
