5 Smart Ways to Build a Weather-Resistant Beach House – Here Are Some Tips From This Builder:
So many of you asked how homes this close to the water are protected from the harsh coastal elements — and honestly, it all comes down to building smarter from the very beginning. Here are some of the most important features we prioritize in waterfront homes:
1: Durable Coastal Siding For beach homes, we love using PVC and fiber cement siding because both hold up beautifully against salt air, humidity, and strong coastal weather. One of our favorite options is NuCedar by @jain_building because it gives you the timeless look of real cedar without the constant maintenance. We also trust Hardie Plank by @james_hardie for its durability and long-term performance in coastal environments.
2: Flood Vents Are Essential: Flood vents are absolutely critical in waterfront construction. They help equalize water pressure during flooding by allowing water to flow through properly, which can help protect the home’s foundation and structural walls from major damage. This is one detail we never skip.
3: Water-Resistant Flooring on the Ground Level: On the main level, we always recommend tile or Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP). Both are durable, beautiful, and much better suited for coastal living where moisture and storms are always a possibility.
4: PVC Exterior Details: Whenever possible, we use PVC for exterior trim, railings, columns, and decking details. Coastal weather is incredibly hard on materials, and PVC stands up to moisture, salt, and sun exposure with far less maintenance over time.
5: Proper Window & Door Flashing: One of the most important — and often overlooked — details in coastal construction is properly flashing windows and doors. This helps create a watertight barrier around openings where moisture loves to sneak in. Done correctly, it can make a huge difference in the long-term durability of a home.
