Home Bunch - Interior Design Ideas

As the most beautiful time of the year approaches and we start to slow down, I think we must take a break to look at everything positive we have accomplished this year and even if we can’t be surrounded by everyone we love, we should also learn to appreciate the calmness and the beauty of having a slightly quieter Holiday Season, preferably in the coziness of our own home.

As cliche as it sounds, in my opinion “home really is where the heart is” and this South Carolina’s House Tour will show us just that.

The interior designer, Suzanne Barrow of Barrow Interiors, has been featured on Home Bunch many times where she and her husband, Byron Barrow of Barrow Building Group, have built and renovated stunning homes in South Carolina for over twenty years.

Of all the inspiring homes they have shared on the blog, today is an extra special day because they are sharing their recently-built home. Suzanne, a very talented interior designer and mother of two, took some time to share all of the details of their new project and I know that you will be inspired by their beautiful home and by this beautiful and hardworking family:

“Here are some fun background about our journey to build our house:

We had been renting a little cottage on Sullivan’s Island for a few years and had the ½ acre lot for at least two years before we were able to build our personal home because we were too busy with our client custom home builds. “Cobbler who has no shoes.” ☺ So when we were finally ready we knew we want to work with Heather Wilson Architect; a renowned architect based in Charleston. With a minimal aesthetic and design philosophy we loved that Heather focuses on the connection between the inside and out. Featured by Southern Living as one of its 50 People Who Are Changing the South, she is highlighted for “altering the notion of the Southern farmhouse, streamlining the familiar form for today with sharper exterior lines, modern palettes, and bold details.” We wanted a Heather Wilson design because we wanted that modern but Southern Low-country feel and timeless sophistication. We love that the architecture is not just a box but L-shaped with multiple rooflines. The house feels way bigger than 3,200 square feet (4 bedroom, 3.5 bath) because of the vaulted ceilings. I love how Heather designs multiple structures that are connected to each other by a grand hypen/hallway separating the main living space from the bedrooms for more privacy.

The house has high-end custom finishes including White Oak flooring, custom cabinetry in Kitchen, Mudroom and Master Bath, Namibian White Marble countertops throughout, high- end designer lighting, custom plumbing, whole house water filter, stucco fireplace, vaulted shiplap ceilings in main living area and Bedrooms, an open floor plan perfect that’s for entertaining and an amazing backyard oasis. The first floor includes a walk-in Butlers Pantry and Bar with custom cabinetry, Pantry Mudroom and Master Bathroom all by local woodworker, Brook’s Custom Woodworks. The first floor also has a study/library with shelving throughout and a cool little powder bath off the stairs.” – Suzanne Barrow of Barrow Interiors & Barrow Building Group.

The fireplace is the main focal point when you walk through the front door so I wanted to it to be the “design statement” in the room so we had Charleston Plaster Company stucco the entire bump out from floor to ceiling in a custom grey color.”- Suzanne Barrow of Barrow Interiors.

Happy Moments

There’s nothing more important than creating a home – big or small – where we can make memories with the people we love the most. That smile and those toes melt our heart, doesn’t it?! I miss my kids being that small! 🙂

Kitchen

“I am not a huge fan of a lot of upper cabinetry in a kitchen because it closes it in and I think you can get creative designing alternative storage options like a custom built china hutch so it almost looks like a furniture piece and then design a lot of your storage in a butler’s pantry.” – Suzanne Barrow of Barrow Interiors.

“There is a secondary entry door into the mudroom off our front entry porch area. The house is elevated so you have to go up the stairs to get to first floor entry. When you get up the stairs there is the main entry door with gas light and a secondary door into mudroom/laundry. I wanted to make sure that my washer and dryer were hidden since guests coming through entry door can see into mudroom so I had Eric (Brooks Custom Woodworks) design custom tall cabinetry to hide washer dryer with additional storage shelving built in over the front load W/D.).”
