Buying a 1980’s fixer upper requires some courage, but more than that, it requires a lot of vision, which can be a little easier if you aren’t afraid of some elbow grease and if you have a talented daughter to help you out! This is exactly what happened to this lucky mother who had her daughter, Shelby of Farmhouse Living, envision the new areas and improve the spaces that needed improvement.
This fixer upper felt outdated but had the perfect layout for Shelby’s parents and all they really needed to do was add new flooring, bring some cozy furniture and accessories (think layered rugs and slipcovered furniture and add a new kitchen – a space that Shelby’s mom can certainly feel proud to call her own!)
The interiors now feel approachable with coastal farmhouse influences and the homeowners are happy with how they turned out.
Find a comfy spot and who knows… maybe this might even inspire you to renovate a fixer upper some day! 🙂
When it comes to redesign a home, you need to balance the elements and this thrifted and refinished hutch does it quite well to this space. The designer used a charcoal grey chalk paint and added white dinnerware for some contrast.
Walls are painted in “Sherwin Williams Alabaster” , which works beautifully with the dark hardwood flooring.
A pair of drum chandeliers bring an updated feel to this space. Notice the beautiful ceiling beams.
The dining table was custom and locally made.

I love how this space feels! It invites you in and makes you want to relax and slow down… Aren’t we all needing that?
Sofas – Felicity Standard Sofa (highly-recommended!).
According to the designer, the biggest update in this space was the fireplace and the built-ins around it. She used Austin Stone with white mortar added using the German smear method. The mantel is a reclaimed barn beam and the hearth is white concrete.

The Fiddle Leaf tree is real – similar here (faux).
The designer’s father weld a box for the firewood. Isn’t it a brilliant idea?! I love how the black metal looks against the white cabinetry.
