Built in the 1930s by Henry Ford at his winter retreat near Savannah, this former caretaker’s cottage had been abandoned for decades. Historical Concepts consulted on the restoration of the primitive, 800 square foot cottage for clients who were compelled to save it from demolition and preserve Ford’s legacy. Original poplar tongue and groove walls, heart pine floors and terra cotta roof tiles were restored, while antique lighting and architectural salvage finds were added for period authenticity. A screened porch, designed to complement the home’s historic character, adds entertaining space and a place to enjoy the coastal setting of The Ford Plantation.
This cottage shows why life is a little sweeter in the South… Enjoy!
You enter this cottage and you’re immediately embraced by its charm. This is a place you go to wear romantic summer dresses and flip-flops. 🙂
The washed walls give this cottage a rustic feel to it. The walls were painted with a watered down paint, which contains 50% paint, 50% water.
The coffee table is a vintage piece. Artwork is by Bellamy.
What a cute and cozy dining room!
The chandelier is a custom design made from reclaimed and antique lighting parts. The designer is Eloise Pickard with Sandy Springs Gallery in Adairsville, Georgia.
This kitchen is practical and very inspirational. I really like the open shelves and the paint color on the cabinets.
The lighting is handcrafted by Eloise Pickard ((404) 252-3244), who uses parts and pieces from antique fixtures to create new light fixtures. Each piece is custom made.

The wood countertops are heart pine.
The bedroom is very cozy and full of charm!
What a fantastic space! It was beautifully restored and I love the floors.
Also, notice the vanity table here… You always see people wanting two sinks in the bathroom, but if you don’t have the budget for a renovation, you can always add a nice vanity table and have a place for you to put your make-up without being interrupted.
This is a great place to have breakfast in the morning… very peaceful!

This cottage is so sweet and simple. East to love and live in.
What a charming and comfortable cottage. Just love the colors they used and the touches of stained wood adds such warmth. So hope you are doing well – happy Tuesday!
I could move into this place right now! Love everything about it – I prefer super small homes than medium-large homes. Good idea re putting a table in the bathroom rather than the extra expensive of a vanity sink. Thanks so much for showing this gorgeously humble home.
Amazing to see how beautiful they crafted the ceilings with all the wood.
A down to earth, comfy, cosy home…..my kind of place! Some of the same words I would use to describe this blog’s creator. Thank you for your work, and for your words of encouragement.
So charming and homey and cozy. Well done!! Enjoy your day…
“Cottage Sweet Cottage!” Positive thoughts!! franki

My husband and I are putting plans together for our dream home. This cottage is exactly what I want. I love the washed walls. I’ve never seen that before. Could you decorate my home? 🙂 Great job!
Where is the fabric on the bedroom pillow from? I have had this picture saved for years because i LOVE that pillow!
Where do you think I could get a light fixture like the one in the bedroom? Thx
