Little Ways to Add Texture to your Home

When considering a subtle room transformation to freshen up your living space, many people think of incorporating color through paint, new draperies or furniture pieces. However, there are little ways to add texture to your home that can bring a visual impact in surprising, unique places. Check out a few ideas that welcome multi-sensory appeal and an inviting atmosphere.

Encourage Guests to Linger with a Cable-knit Blanket

The feel of cable-knit is as cozy and comforting to the eyes as it is to your body on a chilly night. Choose a blanket in soft cotton and drape it across the back of the couch so it’s easy to grab during cold weather. The best thing about fabrics as little ways to add texture to your home is that they’re temporary. Switch out the blanket seasonally or move it to a different room when you need a new look.

Show Your Green Side by Adding Pallet Bookshelves

Pallets are the rustic, wooden frames shippers use to transport heavy goods, but they’re also popular as a textural element in home interior design. The distressed style is perfect for bookshelves, adding a weathered component to the space and creating a visual focal point. Display your favorite volumes and arrange a few other accent pieces as well. Personal photos, candles and vases work wonderfully when contrasted against the wood texture.

If you’re looking to store other items around the house, you can try a ventilated shelving system.

Go for Fun with a Faux Fur Pillow

This fabric may not work for all types of décor, but faux fur on a pillow makes a fun statement when you’re trying to lighten things up. Plus, throw pillows are inexpensive to switch out if you grow tired of the look. If you decide on faux fur as one of the little ways to add texture to your home, make sure to keep the color neutral. You want to add visual interest, not give the impression that you’re decorating the bedroom of a younger child.

Create Contrast at the Windows

Many homes use both drapes and shades at the windows, so here is a great opportunity to add texture in a room. Try bamboo roller shades, and then add silk or satin as the drapery fabric. The contrast appeals to the senses, with a rustic feel at one level and elegance at another. You could also switch the concept around; go for sophisticated Roman shades and use a burlap fabric to frame the window.

Add a New Dimension to Wall Art

When you think of wall art, you likely see watercolour pieces, oils or photographs on the wall in attractive frames. However, you need to keep in mind that art can take on so many more levels when it’s 3D in nature. If your room is nautical, you can hang an old oar on the wall. Other textural components that make a statement include musical instruments, sconces or shelves.

As a storage option, you can also try adding a wall wardrobe.

Give an Ottoman New Life with Nail Head Trim

That boring old piece is great for extra seating or an idea over wardrobe storage, but it’s not doing your décor any good unless it’s also appealing to the eye. The good news is that you don’t have to get rid of it or buy a new ottoman. You can dress it up by adding upholstery features that also bring some texture. Nail head trim is inexpensive to purchase, easy to find and a breeze to install. All you’ll need is a hammer and an afternoon to transform an old ottoman into a new living room staple.

Turn the Floor Into a Focal Point with a Textured Rug

Don’t forget the floor below when you’re looking for little ways to add texture to your home. Jute and other natural fabrics create interest underfoot, where your guests will least expect it. If your personal style tends to be more elegant, try an Asian inspired rug or patterned floor covering. One of the latest trends in interior design is layering rugs. Choose two or three in complimentary colors or textures, and then place your furniture accordingly. The best thing about a rug as a decorative feature is that it’s useful for other reasons, including sound absorption and eliminating droughts on a chilly night.

Are you thinking about little ways to add texture to your home décor or do you want to go all-out with a room transformation? Either way, the important thing to keep in mind is that texture works best when it’s layered. Whether you use a little or a lot, you can introduce it in any room and with any color scheme. Texture through fabrics, woods and other materials adds visual interest, dimension and a comfortable feel to your living space.
